THE BEATITUDES OF HEALTHY LIVING

The beatitudes of old were blessed up on a mountainside, but now you need not go up on a mountain to know this. All you need do is read and act, at the comfort of your home, office, wherever and whenever.

And these I speak unto you. . .

• Blessed are those who wash their hands regularly, for they shall be free from infections.

• Blessed are those who eat greens, for they shall keep their teeth.

• Blessed are those who exercise, for they shall lose weight and keep fit.

• Blessed are those who get adequate sleep, for they shall renew their minds and bodies.

4 Things A Good Dentist Does

No matter if you've visited the dentist a thousand (though we certainly hope not!) times or only a handful, there are certain things you need to remember when visiting a dentist. Though these may not be directly connected with your mouth, these things are the characteristics that set a good dentist apart from the rest.

These things can make or break a deal with a client and can help put him at ease as well. Here's a list of the four things that every good dentist does that can help a client tell them apart from the rest of the sea:

1) They're Interested in What You Want To Say:
A good dentist will always be interested in what you're feeling. They might have their hand in your mouth but they know that you know how that feels so they will always be interested in how you would like your teeth and how you're feeling about them.

STEROIDS PERFORMANCE-ENHANCING DRUGS; THE RISKS INVOLVED. . .

AdSTEROIDS PERFORMANCE-ENHANCING DRUGS; THE RISKS INVOLVED . . . .
By Joy Okon

Basically, athletes involved in elite sports are tested for performance-enhancing drugs. These drugs are steroid-based. Although these drugs have been banned by sport associations worldwide, some athletes still test positive to these drugs. Now, the question is, are these drugs really worth it?

Studies have confirmed that steroids can increase muscle mass when used in large amounts and coupled with heavy exercise. However, their adverse effects far outweigh any benefits derived.

These adverse effects include:

  • On the Cardiovascular system:

TAKE EARLY MORNING WALKS

Strengthens bones, joints & helps prevent osteoporosis.

Early morning walk is one of the best exercises for healthy life. It gives us a sense of happiness calms our agitated nerves and cools the mind, body and soul.

The freshness and mist that you feel in the early morning is hard to find. A 30 minute walk early in the morning is equivalent to 2 hour hard core exercise in the gym.

The best time for a morning walk is 5:00 Am to 7:00 Am.

Early morning walk helps:

LOWER-BACK PAIN

 by JOY OKON

You stand and it feels like your back is preparing for a werewolf transformation. For those that are not familiar with the 'vampire diaries' series, a werewolf transformation is excruciatingly painful. When you sit, you experience the same thing. Even when you lie in bed, same thing occurs. Welcome to the pleasures of lower-back pain.

According to the American Chiropractic Association, four out of five people endure lower-back pain at some point in their lives. It can hang around for a few days or months, and even years. Such fun times eh. Some culprits are involved.

Common culprits include:
·         Exercise mishaps
·         Muscle strains
·         Postural changes during pregnancy, and
·         Bulging or herniated discs says Dr Jennifer Solomon, MD, a board certified physiatrist at hospital for Special Surgery in NYC.

THE MOUTH-BODY CONNECTION

By Joy Okon

Normally, an endocrinologist will assume two times earlier than sending A patient to a gum expert. Yep, you read proper, a gum Specialist. Now the query is, what has one got to do with the opposite? I'll let you know.

Some'll let you know your eyes are the windows in your soul, i'll Inform you your mouth is the door on your body, depart it Unguarded and the body gets invaded. Back to the problem,

The mouth-body connections:

  • ORAL HEALTH AND DIABETES
Individuals who be afflicted by periodontal disorder have a better Risk of growing diabetes. Irritation in the mouth Weakens the frame's ability to manipulate blood sugar because of the Release of cortisol which in turn increases insulin resistance After which voila diabetes appear.

AGEs; STAYING OUT OF TOUCH. . .

This is where the most important question lies; how do you prevent yourself from AGEs?

The answer to that lies in two words, "STAY HEALTHY". . .

It is well-known that overeating and obesity can lead to insulin resistance, triggered by chronically elevated oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. The body naturally rids itself of harmful AGE compounds, but it doesn’t eliminate them effectively when too many are ingested through food.

So how can you help yourself?
  •  DIETARY INTERVENTIONS
Dietary interventions that reduce the consumption of foods high in AGEs, which are common in the standard Western diet, can be effective in helping prevent these metabolic disorders.

Dietitians recommend patients eat less sugar and fewer processed foods, and this is very important for patients who need to lower their AGE intake.

To reduce AGE consumption, eating foods that contain low AGE levels is key to decreasing the risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

‎HEALTHIQUETTE‬ - EATING JUNK FOOD

Quit eating junk food and high-fat fast food. Your heart, brain, and overall health are harmed by foods high in saturated fats, salt, and cholesterol.

In your health's best interest, you have to replace them with healthy foods: lots of fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, olive oil, etc.

Eat like an Italian, a Spaniard, a Greek! Enjoy!

WHAT HEALTH RISK(S) AM I EXPOSED TO, BEING BITTEN BY BED BUGS?

Bed bugs can cause a number of health effects including skin rashes, psychological effects, and allergic symptoms. We already discussed that in our  previous post.

They are able to be infected by more than 28 human pathogens (including viruses, bacteria, protozoa,
and parasitic worms), such as those causing anthrax, plague, hepatitis, HIV, the virus that causes AIDS and typhus, and have been found naturally infected with many of these disease agents (especially hepatitis B virus).

DEALING WITH BEDBUGS {Post Series} - POST 5

GOOD RIDDANCE TO BUG RUBBISH

By now, everyone will agree that bed bugs are very stubborn creatures to deal with.

From the previous post  ORGANOPHOSPHATES DO LITTLE, we have clearly established the fact that not all insecticides work on bed bugs. They have become so resistant to insecticides, and these insecticides are not at all good for our health.

THE SECRET TO BED BUG DEFEAT

Since these invaders are very tough enemies, they require stringent measures to eradicate.

The secret to lasting victory over bed bugs is OBSERVING CONSTANT ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION and MAINTAINING PROPER HYGIENE.

REFEEDING SYNDROME

It's a very common advice, that after embarking on a fast (especially a long one), water (most especially), or any drink at that (but not alcoholic) should be the first thing to take after breaking, then afterwards, light foods.
Some people have attached spirituality to it, while others have taken it as matter of generality, while not even knowing if it's right or not. Like the saying, "a lie spoken frequently often becomes the truth".

Now, let's forget about the spirituality or the generality, and go straight to the medical side and implication of this. Why should you take water or something light after a period of fasting?

This is not a matter of religion or spirituality, but it is very important that you take something light after a period of fasting in order to avoid what is known medically as REFEEDING SYNDROME.

Refeeding syndrome occurs when a person recovering from a period of starvation (fasting) is fed too rapidly i.e too fast, and this could be dangerous and sometimes fatal.

NEW INDICATOR FOR STROKE DETECTION

During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics). . .she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, she went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Her husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital, where she later passed away. SHE HAD SUFFERED A STROKE at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps she would still be alive today.

Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

According to a neurologist, a stroke victim can totally be restored back to good health and the effects of a stroke can be totally reversed if the victim is taken proper care of within 3 hours of attack.

Health benefits of eating placenta 'unproven'

After giving birth, many women opt to consume their placentas for multiple health benefits. A new review of studies investigating placenta consumption, however, has failed to uncover any scientific evidence for these benefits, or that the practice is risk-free.

The study, published in Archives of Women's Mental Health involved a review of 10 published research studies on placentophagy - the practice of consuming placentas after childbirth. Four of these were human studies and six were animal studies deemed relevant to human practice.
During pregnancy, the placenta develops within the uterus to provide oxygen and nutrients for the baby and to remove waste products from its blood. When the child is born, the placenta is usually delivered shortly afterward.

SELF CPR TO SURVIVE HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique useful in many emergencies, including heart attack or near drowning, in which someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped.
It is recommended that everyone — untrained bystanders and medical personnel alike — should learn how to do CPR.

It's far better to know something, at least, than know nothing at all if you're fearful that your knowledge or abilities won't be 100 percent complete.

Remember, the difference between your doing something and doing nothing could be someone's life.

What if it becomes the case where you are the victim, then what happens? How will you save yourself?

Let’s say it’s about 7.25pm and you’re going home (alone of course) after an unusually hard day on the job. You’re really tired, upset and frustrated. Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to drag out into your arm and up in to your jaw. You are only about five km from the hospital nearest your home.

WORMS; WHERE DO THEY FALL IN OUR SYSTEM?

In my early years on earth, growing up, the issue of worms and deworming was a common thing. Virtually every child in the neighbourhood had his/her own issue to deal with. We were almost all affected.

But after my first and second year in Med school, in all my basic anatomy and physiology classes, it was just as if the word 'worms' was missing in every lecturer's dictionary, nobody mentioned it, not even once.

I began to wonder; then where do those worms belong? Where have they come from? These questions are what have led to putting down this write-up.

First of all, especially for parents, it is pertinent to know that worms are NOT an integral part of the human system. This fact needs to be established before we proceed. Your child having worms IS NOT a normal thing, as most parents have been made to believe.

DEALING WITH BEDBUGS {Post Series}

INTRODUCING MR. BEDBUG

I know, and I'm totally convinced that this mister needs no form of  introduction. His name has become an household name, he's an unwanted and uninvited guest that has somehow found its way into most homes. Hmmm! I can imagine your plight.

Tell me, how can you fight something you don't fully understand its course? You think you know this guy; I bet what you know is just a pinch, hence, the need for proper introduction, or better still, re-introduction. By the time you're done reading this, you'll get to see why you've not been able to easily wipe them off your room.

Leaving all formalities behind (that is, no more Mr.), let's call the spade, a spade.

BEDBUGS ARE INTERESTED IN YOUR BLOOD, NOT YOU

Bedbugs, honorarily designated by zoologists as Cimex lectularius, are small hematophagous (blood-sucking) insects that live in cracks and crevices, but thrives best around the corners of your couch and bed. You sure know what is keeping them there.

PILL SWALLOWING AND CHILDREN

If you’re a parent, you know how difficult it can be to get a child to swallow a pill or capsule. Age, fear, anxiety and taste often stand in the way of doctor’s orders. Now, a new study looks at various interventions aimed at helping that medicine go down.

The researchers analyzed findings from 5 studies that looked at barriers to medication administration in kids up to 21 years old. They looked at the use of behavioral therapy, flavored throat spray, specialized pill cups, simple verbal instruction and head posture training. The results showed that all of the interventions helped children swallow pills easier…and at least one of the published articles found that younger kids, 4 to 5 years old, actually needed less training than older kids.

HELP!!! MY SON HAS BREASTS, WHAT CAN I DO???

Before we start at all, please don't be afraid. The fact that your son has/is developing breasts doesn't mean he's turning a girl or going gay. Something else is involved, so you can put your mind at rest while you carefully go through this.

It is very obvious and which is what you know that it isn't only your son that is going through this same thing. It is estimated that about half (or a little more than) of all males during puberty (or going through puberty) experience this same thing to some degree. More reason why you shouldn't panic.
