Yes,
people lie, and that, very well. But when lying becomes a thing that
you (the liar) are unaware of as you lying, then it becomes a problem.
This sounds ridiculous, yes so true, but it's for real. There are people who lie without them knowing they do so.
Of
clinical significance, this is known as MYTHOMANIA. Dressed with other
names e.g Pathological lying, Pseudologia fantastica, etc.
Mythomania, is a behaviour of habitual or compulsive lying. People who are affected are called Mythomaniacs.
It
is important to know that mythomania is not an illness in itself, but
accounts for a set of symptoms that can show themselves in different
mental illnesses, particularly in personality disorders.
Mythomaniacs
recount experiences that are nothing but fantasies. These factitious
stories are a compulsive action, and the mythomaniac is sometimes not
even aware they are lies.
A mythomaniac does not realize that he or she is lying, being unable to tell the difference between reality and fantasy.
People
suffering from this may also present false memory syndrome, where the
sufferer genuinely believes that fictitious (imagined) events have taken
place.
Though very little research has been done on this issue, but the few suggest that;
•
Mythomaniacs have less grey matter (responsible for processing
information) and more white matter (transmits information) in the
prefrontal, orbitofrontal, inferior frontal, and middle frontal cortices
of the brain.
• It could either be a genetic condition, or an environmentally induced one.
• This disorder can be due to different traumas that push the individual to subconsciously escape reality through lies.
Further research is needed on this subject to determine the main cause(s).
It
is unfortunate that, no research has been performed regarding the use
of pharmaceutical medication(s) to treat this condition. So as of now,
there's no drug to treat it.
Psychotherapy appears to be one of the only methods to treat a person suffering from mythomania.
Consultation with a psychiatrist can be the best option for now to help this disorder.
